"Untethered"

March 21 - April 19, 2014

“I came across the paper cuttings of Hans Christian Anderson at a time when major life changes left me feeling bare and dislocated. The technique of hand-cutting old maps and painting in the gaps emerged for me as a metaphor of holding the world even as its outlines shift radically and unpredictably.” MMG

Weeknight Rodeo presents "Hearth"

Dec. 14, 2013 - Jan. 18, 2014

Artist Reception - Saturday, December 14th, 5-8pm

The home and the hearth. The two are historically inseparable. The center of the home, warm, and nourishing. The ancient Persians prayed at the hearth and the Greeks celebrated the goddess of the hearth, Hestia. Weeknight Rodeo have taken parts of their childhood, their traditions, their memories to create the work for Hearth. Hearth is a collection of nostalgia. Pieces constructed of discarded materials, alterations of antique items, a reconstructed memory from childhood. Artists Bonnie Cunningham, Jennifer Huang, Amber Imrie, Lauren Tarver, Adriana Villagran, & Lucy Wonsower have shaped a work of longing. Hearth is the presence of family and the a feeling of home as well as the absence.

Museum of Craft and Design presents

"Eye Candy" by Charlotte Kruk

Nov. 16, 2012 – Jan 25, 2013

Bay Area artist Charlotte Kruk creates wearable sculptures that humorously comment on a culture often known for comparing women, particularly well-dressed women, to decorations, consumables…“Eye candy.” With an obsessive-compulsive approach to the assembly of her designs, she initiates a dialogue on packaging, brand association, and power structure by reusing discarded candy wrappings and other various packaging as her primary palette. Her sculptures also direct a commentary on the gluttony and wastefulness of a disposable, packaged society. Kruk is fascinated by the energy and creativity involved in making flashy packaging – carefully researched branding and graphics that seduce… Encouraging consumers to purchase, only to later discard their initial allure to rubbish. Reinventing these discards as her palette, she transforms the inherent beauty of these discards into multi-layered works of beauty… With a bite.
